Is Your Recruiter Any Closer To The Job Than You?

You’re excited because you just got a call from a recruiter who sought you out. Should you really be excited? While some recruiters can help you, others may hurt your chances to land a specific opportunity – still others may just waste your time.

Not all recruiters are equal. How can you tell if a recruiter is any closer to the job opportunity than you are?

It usually boils down to the relationship that the recruiter has with the hiring manager – not just with the company, but the hiring manager. There are a number of different types of recruiter relationships, and it helps to determine which kind of relationship your recruiter has.

How can you tell which type of recruiter has contacted you? Which type is the most productive to work with? What should you do if you are working with the wrong type but on the right opportunity?

Remember, just because a recruiter has contacted you, doesn’t mean you have to work with them. If you choose to not work with a recruiter, but prefer to work with another recruiter closer to the hiring manager, emailing the recruiter that you don’t wish for them to represent you should do the trick. Make sure you put the recruiter on notice that you don’t want them forwarding your resume.

If they have already forwarded your resume to one of your target companies, email the hiring manager and HR department to inform them that you are not working with this recruiter (this helps avoid the risk of conflicts for the hiring manager).

These are all questions that should be running through the job seekers’ mind while trying to determine what kind of recruiter you want to work with.

3) Splits recruiter or sourcer …
4) Recruiter with no relationship …

Understanding Your Motivation

Every day I seem to get at least one person contact me that is having an issue with their motivation.  Actually, this really does not surprise me a great deal.  Those who are dealing with job-loss and extended unemployment for long periods of time often get frustrated and find their motivational levels decrease.  This is is no shocker, or at least it should not be to anyone reading this article.  Spending hours applying for jobs and networking with very little tangible results would put anyone’s motivation into a tailspin!

Unfortunately, there is no “quick-fix” for your motivation, but there is hope!  I found the following article on LiveStrong.com, LiveStrong is the foundation that Lance Armstrong created to fight the battle against cancer.  If you are not familiar with the 7-time Tour de’ France champions story, I encourage you to read about his amazing comeback from his own battle with cancer.

As Lance begins his epic quest to become the first ever 8-time Tour champion, I thought that a recent article that was posted on his website might help those who may be struggling with their own motivation through the career transition process and dealing with job-loss…

2 Lessons for Starting a Company from Henry John Heinz

Starting a company from nearly nothing seems to be the the American way.  Discovering a great idea, cultivating it and making a success seems to be the way many of our countries fondest figures rose to prominence.  Not through some great investment from a family member but through humble beginnings and heroic decisions.

H.J. Heinz is no different.  The man whose name has graced nearly every american table in the past 100 years in 57 different varieties or more has a very similar story.

#1 Heinz Lesson: Do Something You Love & Money Will Come

H.J. Heinz or “Harry” as his family called him was a young boy when his family settled on the south side of what is now Pittsburg, Pennsylvania.  Born to a brick layer and a religiously devote mother, H.J. quickly learned his passion.

At age 6, H.J. started helping his mother in the garden.  Spending hours often past dark in the garden, H.J. gained an appreciation for the purity of fresh vegetables.

At age 9, H.J. started selling his vegetables to the neighbors carrying a basket over his arm. Door-to-door H.J. learned selling, marketing and accounting to keep his business successful and his customers wanting more.

At age 10, his mother gave him 3 acres of land to garden himself. After a little time to learn the ropes of gardening on a bigger scale, H.J. graduated to a wheelbarrow to deliver his goods to the customers in town.

At age 12, H.J. worked 3 & 1/2 acres of land using a horse and cart for his 3 deliveries a week to grocery stories in the local towns.

At age 17 in 1861, H.J. was grossing $2,400 a year.  In 2009, that’s $56626.18 a year.  Pretty good living for a farmer with no formal education.

#2 Heinz Lesson: Quality is Your Reputation

In 1905 journalist Upton Sinclair published, “The Jungle“.  The Jungle highlighted the plight of working class Americans in the meat packing industry in lower Chicago during the turn of the century.

Upton Sinclair’s book was a commercial success and instantly created a public outcry for better government regulation on the food administration.  This book is the touchstone which started the argument for the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906, which launched the Bureau of Chemistry which later became the FDA.

But before the Pure Food & Drug Act of 1906 could be passed it had it’s day in public opinion just like our issues of today.  On one side you had the workers & customers on the other side you had a business owners & managers.

H.J. Heinz as a very influential man in the food industry during this time, took a very controversial approach.  He lobbyied on behalf of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906.  H.J. sided with the workers & customers against his other business owners.

Similar to arguments of today, business owners didn’t want government regulation over them while they operated their business.

None of the gossip about the decision bothered H.J. Heinz because he knew what type of quality he expected from his own products.  H.J. was known for his over the top quality for the time.  He is quoted as saying, “We will never save pennies at the expense of our reputation.”

H.J. Heinz always knew that quality controls would make for a better product, happier customers and a more competitive market. It wasn’t simply about a low bottom line to H.J. Heinz, it was about making a quality product no matter the cost.

The #1 Reason People Fail in Their Job Search

The #1 reason people fail in their job search.

Lacking knowledge of self.

To many times people start looking for a job without taking the proper time to assess their situation.

If you’re laid off today, what will you do tonight or tomorrow?

My #1 suggestion if you’re laid off today is: RELAX

(If you can’t relax or wait till tomorrow to start dealing with your unemployment click “laid off today” it will direct you a page of resources from (www.iLostMyJob.com)

Trust me Coping with job loss is normal.

Freaking out, flying off the handle & flipping your life upside down is not normal.

(In any circumstance)

You can’t possibly be so close minded as to think you’re the only person who is job searching or getting laid off.

(Well I hope you know getting laid off isn’t the worst thing in the world. Not even close to the worst thing in the world)

So why make it seem like the world is crumbling down?

Yes, (I understand) emotions run hot, you feel beaten, depressed & probably very angry but is it the end of the world?

NO!

So don’t treat it like it is.

Take time to relax.

You need to decompress.

It isn’t as though you loved what you did so much that now you’re being separated from the only outlet you ever had to express yourself.

No employee loves their job that much in America any more.  You can check out studies.  (Worker Satisfaction at 22 Year Low)

Unless you were a painter and when your company laid you off they cut off your hands, you’ll be absolutely fine.

Now you have a decision to make.  Continue to run on autopilot or start steering your life.

It’s time to plan, plot & plow to get to the fruit of your toils.  If not, don’t expect anything different then to land exactly where you are again in 1, 2 or 5 years.

Use this time to check out resources for your situation.  Trust me, you’ll gain a new appreciation for the invaluable (FREE) skill your 1st and 2nd grade teachers taught you: READING.

Now back to the relax portion of getting laid off.

If you put more stress in your life right now, you might have a mental breakdown.  Now if that happens, you can’t expect greatness from yourself.  You can only expect more hard times.

Go toward what you’re looking for in life, not to what you don’t want.

Trust me, you want to feel at peace again.  Try and find the peace in everyday living.

Do what you can in the day which is free; go for a walk, bike around the neighborhood or go spend time reading in a park.

There will be more challenges, troubles & stress anyway why rush into the face of fire when you can bask in the warmth?

Exactly…take your time & find out what you want to do.

As your thinking about what you want to do, make sure to find out about unemployment benefits.

These will help you feel a little better until things completely calm down.

Unemployment isn’t 100% of your income while you were working but it’s a start.  It can help you float through the turbulent waves of unemployment.

Now this suggestion to relax is only to help you start your career transition from a good place.  Not to be a rosé glow substitute for the work you will need to put into get a job.

It’s meant to help you for the first 24-72 hours.  Which are the hardest.  Think of quitting smoking cigarettes, it’s the hardest the first 3 – 4 days.

You need to keep a good attitude and make sure you’re positive.  The positive start will keep you up and not let you fall into a dark emotional state.

Tempted to Fib on Your Resume?

It’s no secret, the job market is tough.  Today it’s hard for anyone to find a job.  There are few opportunities and too many people trying to fill them.  Sometimes, with serious competition people will turn to any method they think will work to help them achieve their goals.

Ever heard the saying, If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying?

Well, when the difference between winning & losing is a mortgage payment or bankruptcy, cheating starts looking more appealing.  It starts with a little tweak on a resume or fib during a phone interview.  What happens if you have to keep up the lie & it continues to grow?

Then suddenly you’re telling a lie to cover up another lie.  I have found an extreme situation which is in jest but gives you an idea of how large your lies can become if you start fibbing even a little.
